Olive Kitteridge

Judul: Olive Kitteridge

Pengarang: Elizabeth Strout

Penerbit: Simon & Schuster Inc (2008)

Halaman: 270 p

Beli di: Gramedia Plaza Semanggi (Rp 90.900)

This is my first experience reading a Pulitzer winning book. I haven’t even read The Road or Middlesex yet, although both of them had already been translated into Bahasa. So I was quite surprised when I read Olive Kitteridge. The story is very simple, but deep, and the language is also easy, in a good and beautiful kind of way.

Olive is a retired teacher who lives in a coastal town in Maine. Along 13 short stories in the book, we are taken to see the lives of various people in the small city. We met Henry, Olive’s quiet and nice husband; Christopher, Olive’s son who she protects too much; and many neighbours, including Olive’s former students.

In each story, we could feel the presence of Olive, sometimes in a very strong way, and sometimes only in a slight moment, as a background of the main character’s tale. But still, Olive, in her unique way,  fascinating yet a bit eerie, could see through everyone’s story, deep inside their gloomy hearts.

This book is quite depressing, very dark and sad, but you could be brought right there, imagined yourself living in the beautiful coastal town, with so many sad but interesting people around.

I could say that this is a good first experience for me with Pulitzer book, although while I read in some websites, Olive Kitteridge turned out not becomes the expected winner. Anyway, the price of the book is not expensive also. So I will recommend this to anybody who loves good and dramatic storyline, with beautiful background and memorable character.

Hello Wednesday! Had a pretty good night last night despite the fact that there wasn’t SHIT on TV. Is Tuesday night for suck TV or what?? WTF is going on between Comcast and DirecTv? I went to turn on the VERSUS channel and there’s a message basically stating that VERSUS is not being offered right now because Comcast owns it and they want DirecTv to sign something… bla bla bla bla. WHERE DO I GET MY MMA FIGHT STUFF NOW?? Spike is ok but VERSUS had that segment handled very well.

Enough of my pissing and moaning about nothing! Let’s PRON!

1970's Costumes for A 2009 Halloween

There are many directions to go when choosing 1970’s costumes to wear to a 2009 halloween party. The 1970s were themselves a time of social, cultural and sartorial upheaval, a time when people of subculture began to push more into the mainstream. As a result they began to bring their subcultural modes of not only thought and political activism to the fore, but also their manner of dressing. In a way, 1970’s Costumes were a way for people of similar backgrounds, political ideas and desires to identify with others of the same notions.

We identify each other, in other words, by the way we look and dress and act. Some examples of this in terms of 1970’s costumes are swingers, disco dress, and “pimps” in the Superfly mold. Swingers of course, are defined thusly by wikipedia: Swinging, sometimes referred to as the swinging lifestyle, is “non-monogamous sexual activity, treated much like any other social activity, that can be experienced as a couple.”  The phenomenon of swinging (or at least its wider discussion and practice) may be seen as part of the sexual revolution of recent decades, which occurred after the upsurge in sexual activity made possible by the prevalence of safer sex practices during the same period. Swinging has been called wife swapping in the past, but this term has been criticized as androcentric (taking a male-oriented point of view) and inaccurately describing the full range of sexual activities in which swingers may take part. Later, wikipedia goes on to state “In the United Kingdom there was a proliferation of neighborhood groups in the early 1970s — known as “wife swapping” groups — and press articles in later years suggest the peak was 1973–76.” So chosing a swinger outfit as the best of the 1970’s costumes makes some sense. Same with a disco outfit – just look at “Saturday Night Fever” for inspiration, since that is the definitive disco film and provides the best ideas for 1970’s costumes of that mold. And as I mentioned before, Superfly is another great idea.

For those not familiar, Superfly is the story of an inner-city drug dealer who turns against his mafia bosses and goes on a killing spree. Sure, you need a full-length fur coat to pull the costume off, but a creative halloween costumer can come up with that with a bit of effort. Add some gold rings, a cane, sunglasses and fancy hat, and you’re ready to rock with the best of 1970’s costumes.

Baristas Bare Breasts for Bucks

Image via Wikipedia

Sorry, couldn’t resist using that post title. I ran across a rather odd article that related how five “bikini baristas” were charged with prostitution.

While the ladies did not have sex in their espresso stand, they would allow customers to touch their butts and breasts for money. Under the local law, this counts as prostitution. While such behavior can be seen as clearly sexual, I’m not sure if I would consider it to be prostitution. Perhaps it would be useful to have some sort of spectrum of prostitution so as to classify actions based on the degree of activity involved. After all, it seems a bit unreasonable to consider what the ladies did to fall into the same category as actually having sex. Perhaps Bill Clinton could be brought in as an expert on what counts as sex and what does not and various degrees of prostitution could be properly defined. Naturally, Elliot Spitzer should be brought in as an expert on prostitution.

The ladies also ran something of an impromptu strip club and would charge customers extra to prepare their drinks in the nude. This apparently does not count as prostitution, but as lewd behavior.

What I find most interesting about this case is the following: “During a two-month investigation, detectives said they saw the women lick whipped cream off each other and pose naked for pictures at the Grab-n-Go Espresso stand on Broadway.” I’m willing to bet that the detectives competed with each other to get that particular stakeout assignment. One can only imagine why it took two months to investigate the case…

Dear Lois Lowry,

Gossamer – Lois Lowry – 176 pages

“Littlest One is a tiny creature slowly learning her job of giving dreams to humans. Each night she and her teacher, Thin Elderly, visit an old woman’s home where she softly touches beloved objects, gathering happy memories, and drops of old scents and sounds. Littlest One pieces these bits together and presents them to her sleeping human in the form of pleasant dreams. But the dreaded Sinisteeds, dark fearsome creatures that plague their victims with nightmares, are always at work against the dreamgivers. When the old woman takes in John, an angry foster child with a troubled past, the Sinisteeds go after him with their horrifying nightmares. Can Littlest One, and her touch light as gossamer, protect John’s heart and soul from the nightmare of his dark past?”  -Random House website

Gossamer is just one of those perfect books for curling up and reading in bed or under a blanket or somewhere else cozy.  It has just the right proportions of sweetness, gentle humor, real-life troubles, danger and fantasy–a recipe for loveliness!  Littlest One is just so earnest and cute that I can’t resist her, and Thin Elderly is a delight, and the whole thing has that slightly distant fairy-tale feel to it while still laying the characters hearts bare through their actions.  It has the same sort of feeling to me as Season of Ponies and The Sleep of Stone, even though it resembles neither in plot.  Your prose is simple and clear, the story is quick and satisfying, and it’s delightfully clever.  I absolutely love it, and I expected no less from the woman behind The Giver and Number the Stars and Anastasia Krupnik (but what’s up with Anastasia’s new cover?  YUCK!).  You totally rock.  Five stars!

Love,
